A few years ago the World Organization for Environmental Protection placed Vis among one of the ten most environmentally preserved islands in the Mediterranean.
The town of Vis was founded in the 4th Century B.C. by Greek colonists and its entire history is connected to the fish and wine. The Vis Island bays offered throughout the centuries the protection for the boats. The Vis bays offer smaall pebble beaches that are a must visit during the stay on the island.
Komiza is a picturesque Mediterranean town with narrow streets, attractive stone houses squeezed together along the harbor and numerous pebble beaches. The maritime zone of Komiža (neighboring islands of Bisevo, Palagruza and Sveti Andrija or Svetac as well as the volcanic islands of Brusnik and Jabuka) is well-known as fish rich area: the waters surrounding the island of Jabuka are famous as one of the richest condensation of tuna in the area, and all the islands of the Vis archipelago contain large crabs (spiny lobster and American-type lobster) and qualitye fish.
Komiza has always held to a strong fishing tradition – today in Fishermen’s Museum, located in the historical Venetian tower along the sea front, you will find traditional fishermen’s tools, ropes and pulleys as well as a replica of a traditional Komizan vessel, called gajeta “Falkusa”.
On the island of Vis there are activities available as paragliding, diving excursions, horseback riding, trekking, also boat trips to the neighboring islands.
