Dubrovnik - story 

Dubrovnik became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. Damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, it is now the focus of a major restoration programme co-ordinated by UNESCO
In the past, it was a City-Republic, and alongside Venice one of the most famous cultural-economic centers on the Mediterranean. In more recent times, it has become the center of modern cultural and tourist events: a city of summer festivals, museums and galleries. These values have turned Dubrovnik into a place that offers a rich selection of various experiences and excitement, but also a complete holiday in a quiet and calming, mild Mediterranean ambience and wonderful seaside landscapes.
Dubrovnik is a city with a unique political and cultural history (Dubrovnik Republic, Dubrovnik Statute from 1272), and world famous monumental heritage and beauty (inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979.).
The walls of Dubrovnik girdle a perfectly preserved complex of public and private, sacral and secular buildings representing all periods of the City's history, beginning with its founding in the 7th century.
Particular mention should be made of the city's main street in the old historical center - Stradun, Rector's Palace, St. Blaise’s Church, Cathedral, three large monasteries, Custom's Office and the City Hall. The city ramparts are considered to be one of the most grandiose fortification monuments in Europe, and are an example of how fort architecture developed.

Dubrovnik beaches

Dubrovnik offers shallow sandy and pebble beaches for families with children, romantic and sheltered coves, fashionable beaches with the most up-to-date facilities, night parties and sports programmes and quiet little bays and rocks for lovers of diving.
The beaches in the Dubrovnik area are either pebbly or rocky. The most popular sandy beach in the vicinity of Dubrovnik is the Šunj beach on the Island of Lopud.
The Dubrovnik ACI Marina and many hotel beaches in Dubrovnik are marked with the Blue Flag, the most valuable ecological sign of unpolluted sea and beach.
A naturist beach is situated on the Isle of Lokrum, which has many sheltered coves.
The Copacabana beach is equipped with an elevator for disabled persons providing easy access to the sea.
The Banje, Uvala Lapad and Copacabana beaches offer numerous entertaining and sports programmes throughout the day and until the late night hours.

Dubrovnik excursions and activities

Thanks to its geograhical position, Dubrovnik offers international one-day excursions to the Bay of Kotor (Montenegro), the pilgrimage to Međugorje and visits to Mostar, the meeting place of the East and West.

The majority of the city beaches offer various sports-recreational facilities (windsurfing, pedal boats, kayak, banana...) In addition to various hotel facilities and programmes, visitors have the opportunity to get acquainted with the beauty of the Dubrovnik sights and enjoy the walking paths both in the City and its surroundings.
